As much as you don’t want to admit it, the holidays are fast approaching. There’s no better time to start thinking about what to buy your favorite design fan than now, especially with the opening of Acquire in the North End.
Owner Nikki Dalrymple says “Acquire is a home accessories store specializing in design-driven products.” Sure, there are already a bunch of stores that could apply to, right? Nikki goes further:
The North End-based boutique will be a one-stop resource for the best in home design from a cohesive, yet evolving collection of merchandise for the design-savvy customer. Acquire displays a trove of magnificent objects from around the world and, in the process, introduces its customers to the next generation of stellar product designers. The company’s passion is making art and home design accessible, inspiring, affordable, and exciting.
Four qualities I like.
Nikki was sensitive to maintain a certain feel in the store. “Acquire is set-up like a cozy, cabinet of curiosities boutique. We present an eclectic mix of top international designers, little-known niche brands, and vintage/antique rare finds.”

Saab announced that a convertible version of the 9-X Biohybrid coupe that won Best Concept at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show will be introduced at next month’s Paris Auto Show.
The convertible has a striking shape, with its aggressive front end, wraparound glasshouse, and prominent rear pillars that mount the flat-folding Canopy Top and also anchor the separate, recessed rear screen. Saab is calling the 9-X “Air” “an innovative design study exploring what a future open-air Saab could look like.” It looks quite a bit smaller than the current 9-3 Convertible; could this suggest a new, smaller Saab is on its way?
The 9-X “Air”, like it’s coupe variant, is powered by a 1.4-liter Saab BioPower engine that combines the sportiness of a turbocharged small engine, with the use of E85 bioethanol fuel and hybrid technology.
Sure, it’s pretty, but what does this have to do with Boston?
Of the multitude of car shows around the US throughout the year, one of the two places the Saab 9-X “Air” will make an appearance is at our very own New England Auto Show from December 3-7. That’s proof of Saab’s strong history around New England.
Did you know Boston has a fashion week? Yeah me either, but it does.

FRIDAY 9/19 5pm – 7pm | This is Not Fashion – Opening Reception
Experience a synergy of fashion and art in a never-before-seen exhibit by local photographer David Alsdorf called “This is Not Fashion”.
The collection features local fashion industry favorites including clothing from Turtle in the South End, models from local agencies and Miss Massachusetts USA 2008 Jacquie Bruno. The images combine familiar fashion iconography with photographic styles that are usually extrinsic to the subject – such as the criminal mug shot – in order to raise questions about how we read and categorize images. The presentation also uses hand-drawn and photographic superimpositions to comment on the depersonalization of fashion models.
Turtle
619 Tremont Street
South End – Boston
The event is open to the public. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
In order to accommodate all guests we request those interested in attending to RSVP to rsvp@polinafashion.com. For more information on David Alsdorf please visit www.davidalsdorf.com

My friend Tracy emailed me to let me know about South End artist Yuko Adachi. The Tokyo-born artist’s work “is amazing,” so Tracy says.
Yuko’s paintings are extremely bright and colorful, and (on the screen at least) show a plant-like vibe without being direct that, yes, that’s what you’re looking at.
From the artist:
Art is a universal language of the souls. I believe creativity was given to mankind not only to remind us that we humans are spiritual beings but also to experience the infinite love and eternal spiritual freedom we all own in our hearts, which transcend the time and the space we live.
I mainly work with oil on canvas and mixed media on paper. I am interested in discovering my unlimited well of artistic potentials by diving into the unknown and experience where my energy takes me in the given present moment. I wish to share with the viewers the joy of being alive through my works.
This is from the official release:
YUKO ADCHI is a Tokyo born award winning Fine Artist. She was raised in Japan, Paris, London and the United States of America. She has been painting since she was a little girl. She has been showing her works through solo and selected group shows internationally. Her painting was featured for the cover of Artscope Magazine, New England’s Cultural Magazine for May/June 2007 issue and Takara Magazine, the Japanese Culture and Information Magazine in New England for the entire 2007 issues. Her work was awarded for the best in painting for “Healing Power of Art 2007″ by Manhattan Art International in NY.
Yuko Adachi – Burst of Color will be shown at Urban Living Studio on Clarendon St. An opening show is set for Thursday night from 6 pm – 8 pm.

The Boston Design Center is holding it’s annual Design Boston (good name, huh?) event. Design Boston 2008 will be “highlighting the hottest trends, newest products and including a full complement of CEU-accredited seminars in just 3 short days.”
With over a dozen events and lectures, there are enough topics for every design professional to learn something. The great thing is that all of the seminars are CEU-accredited, and there is no fee to attend any lecture, but there is a one-time fee of $12 for processing paperwork. With 0.1 CEU per session, you can exceed your annual requirement of 1.0 CEU at Design Boston.
Have you been to previous Design Boston sessions? If so, how would you rate them? Are you going to this years? Although not a design professional, I’m thinking of going just to keep up with the trends in Boston’s design world. I hope to see you there!
