News And Updates

December 12th, 2008

Tonight, I took the subway to Back Bay station and walked through the South End, all the way to Wareham St to check out Design Nearby 2008 at the PinkComma Gallery.

Design Nearby is an annual one-night exhibition and sale with a different design theme every year. This year’s theme was “Cloth, Paper, Scissors”, focused on printed, sliced and stitched works by Boston-area artists and designers.

I want to write individual posts for my favorites of the night, but here are just a few of the featured designers:

FilzFelt

Leah Giberson

JHill Design

Jenn Ski

In all, Design Nearby was a great success. A good time was had by all, and in the little over an hour that I was there, Kelly Smith (of FilzFelt and PinkComma) was busy writing out receipts and processing payments. Sounds like success, yes?

Here’s one time when a company’s name is quite appropriate.

Two Trick Pony, the Boston-based maker of “ecomodern stationery and notecards” will be at not one, but two events this coming Friday.

First, they will be showing at 826 Boston’s Art Auction: A Benefit for Children’s Literacy. “826 Boston is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.” (If you know anything about me, you know I’m all about supporting nonprofits.)

Says Two Trick Pony’s Carrie Siegel, “Two Trick Pony contributed two broadsides to the 826 auction, and we couldn’t be more excited to be involved with such a great organization.”

826 Boston’s Art Auction is being held this Friday, December 12, 2008 from 6:00–8:00 pm at the Robert Klein Gallery, 38 Newbury Street, Boston.

The other event they will be at is Design Nearby: Cloth, Paper, Scissors.

The annual Design Nearby show at pinkcomma gallery kickstarts the holiday shopping season with “Cloth, Paper, Scissors.” This one-night exhibition and sale (on Friday, December 12) builds on 2007’s successful print-themed show (deemed “contempo” and featured in DailyCandy’s weekend edition). This year’s show focuses on printed, sliced and stitched works by Boston-area artists and designers. Whether on paper, canvas, t-shirts, or textiles, the sixteen featured artists display a variety and breadth of design sensibilities. Each designer will present two to six pieces, with editions available for sale.

“This is our second year participating in Design Nearby, and we’ve created a new set of art prints for the occasion,” says Spiegel.

Design Nearby will be held at Friday, December 12 from 5:00 – 11:00 pm at Pinkcomma Gallery, 81B Wareham Street, in the South End.
