My friend Lisa emailed me today with an interesting question:
My boyfriend and I are moving into a heritage house right away. We’ve had a ridiculous amount of stuff restored to keep the character of the house all olde timey, which is all good for all the rooms except for one. The aviary.
We’re using one of the bedrooms as a sort of vivarium. The birds will live in that room along with lots of plants and a little birdbath fountainy thing. In order for us to enjoy hanging out in there, we’re going to need comfortable, easily-cleaned furniture that the birds won’t like to sit on.
When we went to water our friend’s plants, I noticed he had these white plastic chairs that were pretty comfortable, and seem to fit the bill. Problem is, I don’t know anything about them. Who makes them, which are the best variety, what other furniture goes well with them. I don’t even know what PERIOD they’re from. Repurposed patio furniture is SO not going to cut it in this house.
Help me Obi Wan, you’re my only hope. What the hell am I looking for?

My first thought for comfortable, fabric-free furniture is Kartell. I particularly like the Louis Ghost and Victoria Ghost chairs. They have classic lines akin to antique furniture, but are made of clear (or colored translucent) polycarbonate, giving it a very modern feel.
I’m sure there are a bunch of other options for Lisa and her boyfriend’s aviary. If you have a recommendation, we’d love to hear it – leave a comment below!
