Before you take the reigns, you’ll need to build your skills at managing the business side of the firm, and Mount Ida College can help.

Mount Ida College, in Newton, has introduced a Master of Science in Management with a concentration in Interior Design. This 36-credit, part-time program “is geared towards design professionals who wish to expand their knowledge of management while simultaneously advancing their design skills.”

The graduate degree focuses on the following areas:

  • Basic Concentration Competence. Develop your capacity for critical thinking and hone your ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information. Produce original ideas, products, writing, rendering, and models based on professional-level research. Critique and evaluate emerging strategies, laws, and regulations pertinent to interior design management.
  • Research and Theory. Evaluate and apply quantitative and qualitative data. Demonstrate competency of advanced design skills and knowledge of emerging areas and trends in the field.
  • Technology. Reinforce your understanding of building information models, computer technical drawings, laws, and codes. Communicate and collaborate effectively in a global market, implementing oral, visual, and written skills. Master the project management skills necessary to make good on deliverables while working within budget, time, and client parameters.
  • Leadership. Articulate environmental and sustainable policies for business and industry based upon research and best practice techniques in the interior design field. Identify techniques for implementation of best practice techniques and theories that address universal design standards in the built environment. Apply leadership, management, and design skills to develop and achieve design management goals within defined resources.
  • Information Literacy. Strengthen your ability to identify, locate, and retrieve information that will inform all your professional pursuits. Analyze, evaluate, and synthesize issues that can improve the quality of life, increase productivity, and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

    This actually looks like a pretty well rounded program. I hope it does well. It seems that it will produce some pretty intelligent interior designers.
