It’s odd to think it’s already been a year since the last one, but it’s time for Design Nearby 2009. This annual event is organized and hosted by Kelly Smith (of etcetera media and Filz Felt) and Ann Karash (of smartdames and the 47th), and features local print designers. This year’s theme, “Big Print, Lil Print”, will feature 17 local designers, showcasing two to six pieces, with editions available for sale. “Whether on paper, canvas, t-shirts, or textiles, the seventeen featured artists display
a variety and breadth of design sensibilities.”

Some of my favorites from last year will be there, but I’m looking forward to finally meeting Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg of Nervous System, who I missed at ICFF in May.

Nervous System was founded in 2007 by Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg. Jessica Rosenkrantz graduated from MIT in 2005 and holds degrees in Architecture and Biology. She is currently studying towards her MArch degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Jesse Louis-Rosenberg also attended MIT, majoring in Mathematics. He previously worked as a consultant for Gehry Technologies in building modeling and design automation. They created Nervous System to explore a design approach that relates process and form in a context of interactivity and openness. Their trajectory focuses on generative design methods using both algorithmic and physical tools to create innovative products and environments.

I’m also looking forward to meeting Laurie Mee and Carrie Siegel of Two Trick Pony. They were at Design Nearby 2008, but had to leave for another event before I got there. I hope to get there early enough to head them off this time around.

Design Nearby 2009 will be at the PinkComma Gallery this Friday, December 11, from 6:00 to 11:00 pm — sounds like a perfect time to buy a unique holiday gift for someone special, no?
