The numbers coming out after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Port-au-Prince are staggering: up to 50,000 deaths and nearly 3 Million (30% of the Nation!) are now homeless. Amidst the tragic aftermath in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, the design world — like everyone else — has focused on providing assistance to victims, and to help rebuild.

DWR has announced that they have partnered with Unicef, one of the most respected philanthropies in the world, to provide immediate assistance for the victims. DWR will match, up to $25,000, every dollar raised through their site. To donate, please go to http://www.DWR.com.

Architecture For Humanity has already begun to develop a reconstruction plan for the ravaged city. Once initial rescue and recovery has completed, AFH “will partner with Yele Haiti, AIDG and others by supplying them pro bono construction and design professionals, setting up community housing resource centers and support in the design and building of earthquake resistant structures”.

AFH will work towards providing long term rebuilding assistance, and doing so in the safest way possible. “The NGOs focused on rebuilding need to be aware that in areas of great need structures are usually rebuilt in unsafe ways by well intentioned volunteers.” To learn more about donate to Architecture for Humanity, please go to their Haiti page.

Do you know any other design-related charity efforts? Let us know in the comments! And thanks!
