Vessel Closing Sale

That’s right, the last sale.  Vessel Inc is in the process of closing its retail location in Chinatown.

From the very beginning, Vessel has been run with inegrity and a sense of humor.  It will be a shame to see the retail location close.  Everything from the products to the people will be missed.  The events were informative and well-attended.  The product assortment was smart and there was something for everyone.
Stefane Smith and Duane Barbeau’s unique vision for a company that sells high design based solely on the usefulness of the design was unique and refreshing.  The store was all fun and function without pretension.

But don’t be fooled, this isn’t the end of the Vessel.  I for one can’t wait to see what comes next.

I <3 Vessel Boys & the premise of the store, they're super talented and just great, great guys. They did an amazing creative job for Cor, when it belonged to Plank. I know this is not the end of them sharing their creative genius…

It's all a learning curve, expensive, stressful and exhausting… I'll be excited to see the V-boys next venture, whatever's next…

One of our posse will be stopping by fo' sho'

Sad? Vessel has screwed myself and god knows how many other online purchasers.
I placed an oder for the Candela Luau and Glow 8-lamp set on April 19. Nothing! It is now Sept 8 and I have received no products or refund (barely any responses for that fact).
I find it hard to believe that this company had any integrity. I was extremely patient and in a typical Canadian fashion, occassionaly sent emails asking for updates through the summer. Stephane did send an email saying that they should be shipping that month (June). So now they have my money and I do not get to bask in the glow of these supposed great products.

Hi Minty, I’m sorry to hear about your situation. I’ll reach out to Stefane and Duane and ask them to reach out to you, either for a refund, or to send you a Luau.

Thanks for letting us know about this.

  • Minty

Thanks Gradon. I have done quite a bit of searching for info on Vessel, Stephane and Duane and it seems like everyone has only glowing things to say about them so this situation seems very out of character for Vessel. I have had a couple of email contacts with Stephane during June/July and was told that things would be shipped shortly but sadly, nada. I would be happy with either the $328 dollars of merchandise that I ordered or a refund… they seem like great products… If you do talk to Stephane, mention Martine Dubuc from British Columbia… maybe it will ring a bell.

Hi I wonder if Minty has received any response from Candela? I am in Australia, I ordered and paid for Nicad batteries for the old style Candelas (the originals died) finally tracked the source through Vessel website, lots of back and forthing through customer service and then dead silence. Now I know why – dead company. I did a search and found the answer in your article. Do you think it’s worth my trying Stephane again, as he sent me an email way back apologising for delay. NOT a nice way to close shop with no communication. I wonder how many other customers have given up on ever receiving a refund? Hope you can give me a lead.

    Hi redhill,
I still haven’t heard anything from Vessel or Stephane – which does seem to oppose favourable reviews and comments about the company, Stephane and his design buddy Duane Smith. I did finally lodge a complaint with the business bureau in Boston: http://boston.bbb.org/ I urge you to file a complaint as well and perhaps we’ll see some progress somewhere. Email me at martinedubuc@yahoo.ca so that way we can keep each other informed on leads and so forth. I am out $328 USD… I am not pleased.

  • Martinedubuc

The BBB has closed my file as Vessel Inc will not respond… duh! The store closed! I expected a bit more from the Better Business Bureau. Well, Vessel Inc site is still up, Stephane Barbeau still sells his products on various sites like Generate. Stephane, if you are reading this, refund me my $328 or your reputation will sadly have to be corrected as the designer who rips people off.

I too am “out of pocket” thanks to Vessell Inc. – and would you believe I’m from BC as well! This was my last notification from them: Dear Vessel Customer,

Many thanks for your patience with your Candela parts order. After many months of setbacks, our manufacturer has informed us they’re unable to produce our replacement parts. Our apologies for the unfortunate news!
We’ll go ahead and cancel your order on our end and our accounting department will send along the refund information.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.
    Best regards,
    Vessel Customer Support

That was in May, 2010, and although I send two more inquiries, I’ve yet to receive a refund. The problem is, I’ve enjoyed their lights – just can’t get the batteries any more!

    Hi Dianne,
Let’s keep in touch. I am still trying to get a refund as I am out a lot of money.
There are some other avenues I plan on taking and leads to follow. You can email me at martinedubuc@yahoo.ca

Hi Diane and Martinedubuc, thought I’d check this website out again, as I had totally given up but still have some residual angst over the rudeness of this company, and also wanted to say that in spite of living in Australia I’m from BC too, very odd, must be something about Canadians wanting a fair deal! I’m only $50 out, but the principle…

  • Martinedubuc

I just called Visa to see if they could help. Their policy is a “within” 75 days” which of course with Vessel’s crap about having stock problems and “will ship shortly” bypasses all that.

Visa did give me the phone # for Consumer Protection of BC: 1.888.564.9963.

For others that have been screwed that do not reside in BC, contact your regional consumer protection bureau.

I am looking into whether or not there is a Industrial Designer organization and I suggest registering a compliant against Stephane Barbeau and Duane Smith. If they need to be registered (I am assuming it would be similar to what engineers and architects need to do).

I plan on making their career lives miserable.

    Martine Dubuc
